Pine Wood Alaia Project

At JAXON Surfboards a lot of time and research is spent on producing high quality surfboards with a strong emphasis on sustainability. I have always wanted to build a wooden surfboard, I saw some footage of Ryan Burch riding a foam and wood alaia so effortlessly and since then I have been keen to build and ride my own.

I liked the idea of building a board completely out of wood sealed with this EcoComp UV curing resin I have been working with for a few years. Unfortunately the more traditional Alaia building timber paulownia is quite difficult to come by in the UK, so a pine wood alternative would have to do... A lot cheaper, but much heavier!
The pine wood was relatively easy to shape with just a few basic tools, I used a belt sander and plane to get the single concave. After a thorough sanding I applied a stain varnish, when fully dried I used some decal artwork supplied by artist Angela Cockayne (Angela Cockayne's Moby Dick surfboard project to be posted soon). I also used a soldering iron to burn / etch company logo on underside.
Hopefully get the chance to ride it!
